Thor #282

Thor #282 "Rites of Passage"  Writer: Mark Gruenwald and Ralph Macchio Penciler: Keith Pollard Plot: Thor battles Tempus and is drawn into further machinations of Immortus.  Comments: Thor is still trapped in Phantus's core, transforming into Don Blake. It's still funny to see mild profanity that Gruenwald would later not use in favor of euphemisms.  The Space Phantom frees Thor and promises to take him to his hammer.  Thor and Space Phantom go to Immortus's castle, which looks like something M.C. Escher designed.  Thor comes face to face with Tempus, who was last seen in Giant Size Fantastic Four #2. Thor ultimately prevails. I like how Thor points out Tempus's resemblance to a frost giant. The interior of Immortus's castle looks like M.C. Escher's Relativity .  Immortus recounts his former life as Rama-Tut.  Immortus and the Space Phantom convince Thor to help the Space Phantom's planet, but at the cost of Thor's hammer's time traveling...

Spider-Woman #13 "Suddenly...the Shroud!"  Writer: Mark Gruenwald Penciler: Carmine Infantino Plot: Spider-Woman seeks help and employment at local institute for emotional research, but something sinister may be behind the institute.  Comments: Magnus leaves in this issue. Gruenwald had wanted to write him out. Still there is some foreshadowing on how Jessica refers to Magnus as a father figure, unaware that Magnus possessed her father in the past, which was revealed in Avengers #187, which was co-plotted by Gruenwald. This was also back in the olden days when non-passengers could go inside the gate to see their family or friends off.  Jerry leaves town on an assignment and Jessica decides to look for work. The employment agency tries to place her at various jobs that don't work out. I guess from left to right: It's waitress at a cafe, department store employee and waitress at a men's club.  Frustrated that people's instant dislike of her is making her unab...

Thor #281 "This Hammer Lost!" Writer: Mark Gruenwald and Ralph Macchio Penciler: Keith Pollard Plot: When attempting to travel through time, Thor's hammer is lost.  Comments: Some words about the talent.  Ralph Macchio: Worked mostly as an editor before he retired. In his early days as a writer, he worked as a writing partner with Gruenwald on Thor and Marvel Two-in-One stories. Macchio's first solo writing credit was on Marvel Two-in-One #42 about 7 months before this comic came out.  Keith Pollard: Pollard worked on many of the major Marvel titles like Fantastic Four, Iron Man , Amazing Spider- Man and of course, Thor. Pollard is credited with being the co-creator of Felicia Hardy, The Black Cat.  Pablo Marcos: Worked as an inker for Marvel mostly in the 70s and 80s. Marcos is credited with illustrating a book series I enjoyed called Great Illustrated Classics , not be confused with Classics Illustrated. I personally own The Count of Monte Cristo and K...

Spider-Woman #12 "The Last Tale of the Brothers Grimm!"  Writer: Mark Gruenwald Penciler: Carmine Infantino Plot: The secret and the objectives of the Brothers Grimm is revealed.  Comments: Magnus is woken up by dolls who tell him that Jessica is in danger. He has to remind himself that dolls don't talk, because even for the Marvel Universe, that would be too weird.  Except for opening in Magnus's bedroom and the vision Jessica has later, this story is set almost entirely at the theater. It's what TV shows would call a bottle episode where they make use of one set and a few actors to save money. Paty is given credit for "technical assistance." Usually, credited mononymously as "Paty", Paty Cockrum is X-Men artist Dave Cockrum's (1943-2006) widow and a talented artist in her own right. Her contributions here are unclear.  Mrs. Doll recounts the origin of the Brothers Grimm. Her husband was Nathan Dolly (Mr. Doll) who was defeated by Iron M...
